Closing day of the exhibition “Drawings on the Scraps of Life. The Extermination of Jews in the Lublin Region in Józef Richter’s Sketches”
At the beginning of November 2017 in the Visitor Service Centre of the State Museum at Majdanek, we opened a temporary exhibition of extraordinary drawings by Józef Richter. At first, there was very little information as to the identity of the artist.
After a few months of research, it became clear that he had Jewish origins and, aided by a Pole, Aleksander Paszko, he had been hiding using so called ‘aryan papers.’ Good appearance together with his new identity made it possible for him to join Baudienst. Because of that he was able to watch and draw events related to the Holocaust of Jews on different locations in the Lublin Region. In 1944, Richter disappeared without a trace what can indicate that he hadn't survived the war.
Details of the new information will be presented during the closing day of the exhibition on 19 April at 5.00 p.m. in the Visitor Service Centre of the State Museum at Majdanek. You are cordially invited.
