Generations – Reunion of families of the former Majdanek prisoners
On 20-22 July 2019, the State Museum at Majdanek organizes the Reunion of families of the former Majdanek prisoners – "Generations". The relatives of the people imprisoned in German Nazi concentration camp at Majdanek from all over Poland will take part in it. On the last day of the Reunion there is a ceremony dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the liquidation of KL Lublin.
The intergenerational meeting is an opportunity to exchange personal experiences, remember those who have left, but also to hear the accounts of the last Survivors. During the reunion the participants will be able to listen to the stories of specific people: those repressed during World War II and the "Mommies" – inhabitants of Lublin, who took care of the prisoners. In numerous presentations, we will bring closer the main areas of museum's activities (research, publishing, exhibiting and educational). We have prepared the exhibitions of artifacts and archival materials and we will tell about the conservation of documents and camp relics. Guests will also have the opportunity to explore the city.
The history of places such as Majdanek is told through the individual fates of the prisoners. They are brought closer through educational activities, guided tours, exhibitions and publications. The former prisoners of Majdanek who support museum activities play the invaluable role – they participate in meetings with youth and tell personal stories. Every day the generation of Survivors inevitably passes away. It is the duty of museologists, but also the families of former prisoners, to keep the memory of their relatives alive and to preserve memorabilia of them.
By preparing the Reunion, we want to express our gratitude to former prisoners and their relatives for helping us to fulfil our mission. Showing us great trust, they provide the museum collections with the most valuable family treasures: documents, photographs, artefacts. Thanks to the family memorabilia from children and grandchildren of: Antonina Grygowa, Stefania Perzanowska, Jan Klonowski, Kurt Wojciech Szczudło, we were able to prepare the exhibition “They left behind… Memorabilia and donations of former prisoners of KL Lublin and their families in the collections of the State Museum at Majdanek”.
The reunion ends on July 22 with the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the liquidation of KL Lublin. After the march along the Road of Homage and Remembrance, and official speeches, an ecumenical prayer for the victims of Majdanek and laying of flowers will take place.
The co-organizers of the Reunion of families of the former Majdanek prisoners are the Polish Association of Former Political Prisoners of Nazi Prisons and Concentration Camps and the Office for War Veterans and Victims of Oppression.
„May our voice from generation
to generation go:
For memory, not revenge
Do our shadows call!
Lest our fate be a legend
to You – but a warning.
If the people keep silent,
the stones shall be crying!”
F. Fenikowski, Requiem (fragment)
