Holocaust Remembrance Day
The State Museum at Majdanek is organising the third edition of the educational program ‘We remember… 17 March – 19 April’ which is aimed at students of secondary schools and upper-secondary schools in Lublin who are interested in the history of their city and the times of the German occupation in particular.
This year, the students of the School Complex of Electronics in Lublin take part in the project. Flugplatz – a former German Nazi labour camp located on Wrońska, on the premises of former Plage and Laśkiewicz’s aircraft plant, is the theme of this year’s edition. As part of the program, students will become acquainted with its history and other places connected with it. Students will present the results of their work at the State Museum at Majdanek on 19 April during the commemoration of the Holocaust Remembrance Day. On this day, at 12.00 a.m. at the Monument to Struggle and Martyrdom, we will jointly lay daffodils – flowers permanently connected with this date. Marek Edelman, the last leader of Jewish Combat Organisation, used to get them from an anonymous person exactly on 19 April, on the anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Museum of History of Polish Jews POLIN made daffodils the symbol of tribute to the victims of Holocaust.
The second part of the commemoration will be the closing day of the exhibition ‘Drawings on the Scraps of Life’ showing Józef Richter’s works. In 18 preserved drawings the author, as an eyewitness, depicted tragic events connected with the extermination of Jews. At the beginning, little was known about the drafter’s identity. After a few months of research it became clear that he had Jewish origins and, aided by a Pole, Aleksander Paszko, he had been hiding using so-called ‘aryan papers.’ During the closing day we will present the recently gathered facts from the artist’s life.
