Meeting of the Museum Board of the State Museum at Majdanek

On 27 February the meeting of the Museum Board of the State Museum at Majdanek took place. By unanimous vote, the board members adopted Museum’s activity report for 2017 as well as a work plan for the next year.

The main subject discussed by the members of the Museum Board was the proposal to amend the name of the State Museum at Majdanek, initiated by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. The Museum Board was in favour of retaining the existing name and expressed in the way of resolution its readiness to participate in a broad consultation intended for clarifying the name. Further, the Museum Board suggested systemic and consistent approach to the problem of naming all of the Polish museums of a similar nature.

Additionally, the Museum Board adopted a resolution against statements and opinions expressed in the program ‘Tu i teraz,’ broadcast by TVP3 Lublin on 5 and 6 February 2018, which suggested that on the Museum’s premises as well as in the publications issued by the Museum there is no information about the German nature of the former concentration camp to be found.

The Museum Board is a consultative body appointed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, pursuant to the Act of 21 November 1996 on Museums. The Museum Board ‘shall supervise fulfilling Museum’s duty towards repertory and society, evaluate Museum’s activity on the basis of the annual activity report submitted by the Head of the Museum and deliver its opinion on the annual scheme of operations submitted by the Head of the Museum.’
