Prayer books from Majdanek
A vital part of the Museum collections are prayer books found on the grounds of the Majdanek camp shortly after its liquidation in 1944. Eight of them were analyzed and restored recently, including pocket diary with handwritten notes in French.
The books were brought to KL Lublin by prisoners and confiscated from them shortly after their arrival. A part of them was plundered from the victims of “Aktion Reinhardt.” The books were written in German, Latin, Dutch, and were most probably taken from clergymen. The state of artifacts is verified, depending on the materials they were made of and outer conditions.
Following the conservation, the collection will be scientifically analyzed. As a result more information on antique books and fates of their owners will be gathered. Among the Museum exhibits there are 104 prayer books, including Orthodox, Protestant, Hebrew and Roman Catholic ones. 30 of them have been restored.
