Promotion of the book "Majdanek w dokumentach"
On March 23 in the Hieronim Łopaciński Voivodship Public Library, promotion of the publication “Majdanek w dokumentach” by Wojciech Lenarczyk was held. The latest book of the State Museum at Majdanek is a collection of more than 300 documents concerning KL Lublin and its related institutions.
While opening the meeting, director of the State Museum at Majdanek Tomasz Kranz emphasized that “Majdanek w dokumentach ” is the first edition of sources dedicated to German concentration camps. At the beginning of the presentation Wojciech Lenarczyk talked about his work and the challenges he had to face. The research process in this case was not the easiest one because many of the archival records presented in the book were in poor condition. The author managed not only to collect and describe particular documents but also to organize them thematically and chronologically. The materials are divided into 19 chapters devoted to the various aspects of functioning of the Majdanek camp and its detainees. These are the documents of Polish charities, the German control institutions of the Third Reich and the correspondence of prisoners. They complement the current knowledge of the camp but they are also a starting point for further research and museum activities.
At the end of the meeting a discussion was held in which the gathered guests took part. The author of the publication answered questions concerning e.g.: methods of obtaining documents used in the publication and mortality rates at Majdanek. Promotion of the book “Majdanek w dokumentach” coincided with the closing day of the exhibition “Auschwitz, the factory of death. Topography and everyday reality of the concentration and death camp” presented since February in the Hieronim Łopaciński Voivodship Public Library.
