„So close and yet so far” – the connections between KL Lublin and the world of freedom

The State Museum at Majdanek once again participates in the European Heritage Days. This year the participants of our project will have a special guided tour during which they will learn about the people, who aided the prisoners. The help provided from the world of freedom saved many lives of those imprisoned behind the barbed wire fences of the camp.

The contact with the outside world was particularly important for sustaining both the physical and mental health of the prisoners. The channels of communication were strictly limited, so all those “connections” were established illegally and with great risk from the Germans. It was the only way, however, to move additional food, medicines, and letters from outside the camp. In that contact between Majdanek and the rest of Lublin, it were the civilians working on the camp grounds, who played the vital role. They risked their lives to help others by smuggling items despite the supervision of the SS.
