The unusual escape of three prisoners
On May 15, 1944, three prisoners fled from Fahrbereitschaft Kommando from field III. They were Mikołaj Stebliński “Sasza,” Michał Nadziejko and Jan Poniatowski. The initiator of the escape plan was “Sasza” Stebliński. On that day he received an urgent task to overhaul the commandant's car.
He found an SS-man's uniform in the suitcase which was in the car, and that gave him an idea of escape. After inspecting the car he put up a board saying “test drive” and drove in the camp road. On his way he took two of his colleagues from Kommando and hid them in the back of the cabin. He dressed up in the SS uniform himself and drove up to the gate. He drove out without showing his papers and any problems whatsoever. After few hours the fugitives reached the guerrilla troops.
The pursuit unit was sent after the runners. Their homes were checked as well. The family of Michał Nadziejka was still sending him parcels to Majdanek, hoping that they would not be suspected of knowing his whereabouts.
We present a sheet of paper confirming the sending of packages by the family of Michał Nadziejka.
