Transport of people from the Warsaw ghetto
At the end of April 1943, a transport of people from the Warsaw ghetto, a fight-zone then, reached the concentration camp in Lublin. According to the daily records of the men camp, on the April 26, 1943, there were 12 957 prisoners in a camp. A day later the number rose up to 16 453. This means that within one day the number of inmates increased by 3496.
The next day, April 28, 1943, was described by Jadwiga Ankiewicz in her journal as follows:
"A huge transport of Jews from the Warsaw ghetto came today. They took the men to the men field, and women and children to ours. Women with small children were put to the separate, fenced-off barracks. They told us what s happening in Warsaw. [...] half of the ghetto [!] got blown up, the homes are burning and it s all like hell. These Jewish women we talked to, their faces were red and swollen, said they had spent three weeks underground, hiding in basements [...]."
We present the fragments of the camp daily records of April 26 and 27, 1943.
