Sobibór: Place, Memorial, Exhibition

Sobibór: Place, Memorial, Exhibition
The Museum and Memorial in Sobibór received a special commendation during the 2024 European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) contest. For creating the new Sobibór memorial, the State Museum at Majdanek was also awarded with the 2024 Sybilla – the most important prize in the field of Polish museums. The process of reshaping the former camp grounds into an acclaimed museum of a European recognition is the subject of the publication Sobibór: Place, Memorial, Exhibition prepared by Tomasz Kranz and released in Polish and English.

The first part of the text focuses on the functioning of the German Nazi extermination camp in Sobibór and the post-war transformation of commemorative measures applied on the former camp grounds. In the second the author – and simultaneously the curator of permanent exhibition about the history of Sobibór – discusses the key concepts of the exhibition presented in the new museum building. He also explains the selection of artefacts applied in constructing the narrative about the history of the site, and the curatorial decisions regarding the artistic aspects of the exhibition.
