Visit of Survivor’s Family

Last weekend, the descendants of Mieczysław Panz, a former prisoner of Majdanek, visited the Museum.

Our employees, Marta Grudzińska and Magdalena Petruk, presented them with the materials in our archives. In turn, the guests showed us some unique memorabilia from their family collection: original documents, photographs and artefacts. The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss the planned new edition of Mieczysław Panz’s memoirs, “Prawo pięści”. The publication will be released in collaboration with the Prószyński publishing house.

During the meeting, Mieczysław’s sons Wacław, Witold and Tomasz Panz shared their memories of their father. The recordings will enrich our knowledge of this former prisoner. They will also be used in our educational activities.

The family’s visit concluded with a guided tour of the former Majdanek concentration camp grounds, during which a particular attention was paid to the locations connected with the history of Mieczysław Panz.

Mieczysław Panz was arrested by the Germans in May 1943 for his resistance activities in the Home Army. He was initially held in the Gestapo prison at Łącki St. in Lviv. In August 1943, he was deported to Majdanek. On 22 July 1944, he was evacuated in the final transport to KL Auschwitz. On the following day, while the evacuation column was still moving through the streets of Lublin, he managed to escape when a Soviet tank attacked the convoy.
