Educational activities, guided tours, paying homage to the victims – the State Museum at Majdanek once again joined the commemoration of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005. It intends to commemorate the victims of Jewish origin murdered during World War II by Nazi Germany. The date of 27 January refers to the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp in 1945.

On 26 January the students of the 5th Maria Curie-Skłodowska high school in Lublin participated in workshops concentrating on the personal stories of Jews from Lublin. The biographies and testimonies of Mosze Handelsman, Anna Bach, Diana Bach, Aleksander Grinfeld, Nechama Tec, and Ida Gliksztejn were the prelude to discuss the fates of Jews during the German occupation. Individual experiences of the Holocaust survivors were particularly important in this context.

On 27 January, the museum historian Jakub Chmielewski gave a lecture about the situation of Jewish prisoners at Majdanek in 1943 and 1944. The commemorations concluded with laying flowers at the Gate-Monument.
